Nor’easter 2007—The Sunday, April 15th storm dumped 5’ inches of rain on the township already saturated by 2” of rain on Friday. Flash flooding on small streams occurred Sunday and Monday. Greater amounts fell north of us in the watersheds driving the Rockaway River to flood stage. Vail Rd. at the bridge became impassable as did New Road at Rt. 46. Edwards and South Edwards Roads, as well as Rt. 46 West were also closed for a period of time. Residents of Partridge Run apartments were evacuated as waters shut off access to their buildings. A temporary shelter was opened at the High school. Flooding also occurred on and around Sagamore Road as well as north River Road. At its height the River came within 10” of the top of the Hiawatha levee. A local state of emergency was declared on Monday to coordinate the emergency response. All volunteer and township agencies performed admirably.
Residents are urged to have a disaster plan and supplies on hand to deal with these emergencies. |
